From Head to Tummy: The Simple Truth about Food, Media Messages, Self-worth and True Beauty

Are you and your daughter ready to meet Ashley?

My next book will be out in two weeks!!!!!!

Give your daughter the peace and freedom that come from knowing the truth about food,
self-assurance, and real beauty.

It’s never too early to help your child build a healthy body image.
According to the National Eating Disorders Association
·         42% of 1st3rd grade girls want to be thinner
·         81% of 10-year-olds are afraid of being fat

Your daughter will journey with the adorable Ashley as she’s faced with life’s unavoidable moments that create confusion about food and her body. But soon she will discover the truth and find happiness in learning how to listen to her tummy’s signals, use tools to deal with social pressures, and focus on her true beauty.

From Head to Tummy provides vital tips and assignments for mothers to help build a strong foundation of worth for themselves and their daughters,  as well as help them create a healthy relationship with food in their families.

Why I wrote From Head to Tummy:

While speaking professionally, I found mother after mother confiding in me with their concerns, not only for their teens, which my book A Future for Tomorrow helps, but for their younger, elementary-aged daughters. As society’s confused messages about dieting and beauty increase, I agree there is a great need to address these issues for a younger audience.  My hope is that this book will be a tool for parents in helping them build a stronger foundation of truth for their young girls, giving them a shield of defense when faced with potentially damaging life situations.
The last push came when one of my best friends came to me for help when her sweet second grade daughter was being called fat and continuously being faced with weight focused bullying. That's right SECOND GRADE! This precious seven year old was being told she couldn't be friends with a girl because she "had too much fat on her body" and then she was forced to run around the perimeter of the school's playground to "burn the fat off."  (This will have to be for another post but where do you think this girl learned this negative behavior toward weight? Maybe her mother?)   My friend's daughter's situation inspired one of my character's dilemmas in my book.  Which later  in the book Ashley (and the reader) learn tools of empowerment to deal with this situation. And FYI my friend's beautiful daughter is doing much better and her parents have given her great inner strength to help combat this ugly issue which thankfully has occurred less.

I wrote the book but sat on the manuscript for a while then when the timing was right I was blessed to join with the very talented artist Lori Nawyn for my illustrator and Ashley came to life!
Now, I'm thrilled to have my book published!!!  It will be ready for you to get your hands on in two weeks! You will be able to get it first for a special price on my website and you can pre-order it now!!!!!  www.haleyhfreeman.com  or you can get it after Oct 9th on Amazon.com (here's the link)

It's perfect for elementary ages, tweens and even teens!!!

TEENAGER’S LIFE IS ENSURED BY ENSURE

At the age of 16, straight “A” student, Haley Hatch Freeman was admitted in the hospital weighing 85 pounds due to severe anorexia. Without proper fat and nutrients, her body and brain had begun to die, leaving her delusional and unable to speak coherently. She was incapable of completing the simplest tasks, including feeding, bathing, or even dressing herself.

Freeman’s prognosis was probable death due to her failing liver, kidneys, and heart.  The best case scenario was her being left handicapped and permanently living in the state’s mental hospital.

Doctors and family feared she wouldn't survive, but to their amazement, she not only lived, but her mind healed, and she returned to full mental and physical health.

Ensure saved her life.” Freeman’s parents say. “During the worst time Ensure was all Haley would ingest. For a year prior she had demonized almost all foods, but she never associated anything negative with the nutrition shake.” They continued, “When Haley was too sick to understand how to feed herself, she could still drink Ensure. It truly did ensure our daughter’s life.”

In her book, A Future for Tomorrow Freeman recounts her remarkable story, which is filled with emotional turmoil, faith, parental unconditional love, and miracles.

“The secret to overcoming this illness,” Freeman says, “comes from faith, getting professional treatment, and being honest with therapists and yourself when uprooting the issues that together caused the behavior of self-starvation.”

Freeman went on to accomplish great things in academics and in all aspects of her life. After marrying, Freeman was miraculously able to have three healthy children. The depression and low self-esteem that accompanied the anorexia no longer plagued her. She now enjoys a joyful life with her family in Central Utah.

Today Freeman is a professional motivational speaker at schools, colleges, church groups, retreats, women conferences, youth camps and more. She spreads eating disorder awareness, emphasizes the importance of self-worth, provides tools for prevention, and gives hope of a full recovery to those who are suffering from disordered eating. Freeman mentors youth and parents on several continents and her book is sold worldwide.

Now, sixteen years after her hospitalization, Freeman celebrates how she has defeated anorexia forever and is anxious to share her success with others.

Millard Fireside

I'm going to be speaking at a Fireside in Leamington Utah (Near Delta) this Sunday.  I've spoken in many firesides and other events but I think this is the first time I've seen them advertise my event in the newspaper. I thought this was pretty cool.
Another neat surprise was when I saw who was on the same newspaper page with me. The amazing Chad Hymas.   Chad spoke in the same area last week and the paper was giving a report of his remarkable story and fireside. I'm honored to be paired with this incredible man and speaker.
The fireside is open for ANYONE! My presentations are for everyone but especially for young women and parents.  I'm speaking at 7:00 p.m, this Sunday, Nov. 18th.  I hope to see you there!

My Story Featured in The Daily Herald

Amongst the ciaos I realized I didn't post a link on my blog to the article that was written about me and my book.  Here is the link:  Eagle Mountain Mother Speaks Out On Anorexia

The article actually came out a day earlier than I was told, but luckily I was able to still get my hands on a copy. It was fun seeing how the interviewer added my family's perspective in the article.  I think it is the first reporter that interviewed my parents as well as myself.

The reporter for this article ended up having me speak at her Stake Day Camp for 11 year old girls.  I presented for them last week and enjoyed sharing my message with those sweet daughters of God. I always hope and pray that something I say will have a lasting and positive effect on their lives.

Love it! Replacing the Apology By Karen Eddington

Life as been crazy like I mentioned in my last post, but now things are amazing in our new town and new home! I can't believe this journey has finally found us moved in and almost all unpacked and home decorated.  I'm awe stuck that from just a few quick but powerful promptings we have been lead to such a beautiful outcome. Thanks for all your support and checking in on our family throughout this transition.

Anyway, I want to share another powerful message from my friend Karen Eddington. She was on Studio 5 again with a message worth applying in our lives.
Here's the link to the show  Replacing the Apology  (http://studio5.ksl.com/index.php?nid=54&sid=20941459)

Here's three great tips she shared:

Saying "sorry" too often could be a sign of insecurity. Find out how to replace the apology and appear confident and secure.

At a recent conference a woman asked, "What is the most common struggle you see women face?" The answer is: dealing with inadequacy. So many people don't feel good enough.
One way to overcome our inadequacy is in how we apologize to people. There are times common courtesy is replaced with our feelings of insecurity. Think about the times we casually use the words "I'm sorry" and the reason you say it. Phrases like, "I'm sorry to bother you." "I'm sorry I haven't gotten back with you sooner." "I'm sorry-- you're in my way." "Sorry I can't make it." There are times we use this phrase, not out of being polite, but because we incorrectly assume people are going to think badly of us. By apologizing, we feel like we're creating a back-up plan to defend ourselves IF we are not good enough. People respond to confidence better than doubt. Here are three ways you can replace your apology. 1. "Sorry for the mess":
Picture toys on the floor, mail scattered on the counter, and dishes left in the kitchen skin. Suddenly, the doorbell rings and you have unexpected company. You may feel that if one thing is out of place at home, it automatically means you're a bad mother or a bad homemaker. When you answer the door, you may immediately feel a need to apologize for the state of your home, that your home is not good enough, that people are going to think badly of you. Recognize the false assumptions you are making and consciously make an effort to replace your doubt filled apology with confidence. Celebrate the day you can welcome people to your home even if you have crayon marks on the wall and laundry piling in the corner. Stop apologizing start welcoming.

Replace the apology with "Welcome to my home"

2. "Sorry I'm not very good"
You have just been asked to stand in front of a group of people and talk. Your heart may pound. Your mind races through what to say. One of the first phrases you express is, "I'm sorry." You feel sorry you are up there, sorry they have to listen to you, sorry that it is not "perfect Lisa" that they hearing from. We often apologize when we are asked to share our ideas, or when giving a presentation. The apology in this setting comes when we feel we are not prepared or not smart enough and inadequate. A common phrase people think is, "I'm not smart enough. _________ is smarter than I am." Instead of focusing so much on yourself, and your shortcomings, turn the focus to others. Stop giving in to your fear of what other people think and start seeing other people.

Replace with "You are going to learn..." or any other phrase that includes recognizing another person. Take away the "I." 3. "Sorry it's not much"
You go to the store and spend hours searching shelves, rows, and racks, for the right gift. After carefully selecting the perfect present, you wrap it with care, even down to placing on detailed embellishments. When you arrive at the party you take your precious gift, hand it to someone you care about and say, "Sorry, it's not much." Why, when people put so much time and effort into finding the perfect gift we still feel a need to apologize for it? In case they don't like it, think that we chose incorrectly, or judge that we didn't spend enough money we give ourselves an outlet to protect ourselves. Remember the impacts of kindness on the lives of others and let that give you strength to stop apologizing. From the simple to the well thought out, the next time you share a gift with someone remember what a gift is. It in itself is an act of kindness. It is enough. You are enough. If a person is not accepting of your gift, then that other person is the one with the problem and not you. Stop second guessing yourself and start remembering the power of your compassion.

Replace with "I was thinking of you"
Karen Eddington is a Self-Worth Analyst and has spent over ten years researching women and teens. She is the author of Today, I Live and directs many community outreach programs on self-esteem. For more information you can go to www.kareneddington.com

I'm sure you have heard about Stephanie Neilson's remarkable story before, but her courage and strength has really touched me lately, here is Stephanie's story:

My favorite line of hers is, "I am not my body"

Yes, our bodies are vitally important for our progression in this life and the next but knowing that we are MORE than our bodies is priceless.
